“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” Galatians 5:22-23a
The fruit of the Spirit are something we all learn in Bible school. From a young age we go over them, sing them, and do crafts about them. But do we really understand them?
Love seems simple but is the hardest of these. Without love none of the fruit of the Spirit are truly possible. Love is needed for us to have true joy, and true joy leads to a heartfelt peace. You need love to truly have all the others. They’re all connected.
Study what each word means, and you will find that you need love at the start. So, what is love?
God is love, His Spirit is love, His son Jesus is love.
But the fruit of the Spirit is just that His Spirit. The Holy Spirit in us. With Him we learn to love others, ourselves, and the Lord God more everyday.
So, what is love? The Lord God is. With Him we learn to find joy in the little things. To be filled with peace no matter what. To have patience when others don’t. To be kind when we really want to lash out. To be good and do what is right even when it’s hard. To be faithful when others are un-loyal. To have gentleness were harshness wants to make its self known, and to have self-control when feeling out of control.
They all start with God and His love. With the Holy Spirit in our hearts we learn to love like the Lord and learn to live the fruit of the Spirit.
