“You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14,16
The verses I reference each week come from a journal I was given for Christmas last year, where my name is added into the verse. It makes it more personal and helps you to apply God’s word to your life. As you can see through some times they don’t add the whole verse or skip a little bit to the really important parts. But today I really feel that they should have added verse 15.
Verse 15 says, “Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on it’s stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.”
What do you think the Lord means here? If you look in your Bible you will find these verses are in red meaning Jesus is speaking. So Jesus is telling us to let others see our light shine. In verse 15 He even gives a quick visual about not hiding our light from others. But what light is He referring?
Jesus is talking about the light He gives us. Which is the joy He brings and the love He gives. To show others Him. To show God’s love through our actions, words, and life. To shine our light is to live in a way that is pleasing to God. That lets others know how much He loves them. The happiness that only He can bring. We are the light of the world. The ones that shine before others so that others can see God’s glory.
If we hide our light we are being disobedient to Him. We are to share His word, His love, His mercy, and His grace. This way His is glorified and honored. He is seen and heard, and His children can learn of Him and come to Him. God has made us His light to others. He only asks that we share it so that all can see Him.
