~When The Church Hurts Your Heart~ (Part 1)

Religious Abuse? (pg. 59)

It’s the use of intimidation, guilt and fear to control and manipulate behavior in the name of God. And it can absolutely lead to spiritual brokenness. It distorts the way a person views God, or the way that person believes He sees him or her. It can lead a person away from faith, because the person feels that he or she can never earn a place in God’s heart. (pg. 61)

I personally have never experienced religious abuse. I have been hurt by people in the church before but it is more like when people hurt your heart. But after reading about what religious abuse was and what the person may think and feel after it, I have a little more understanding.

When you feel like you are not good enough for God and that you have to earn His love you are never going to be happy. Lets face it, it is not going to happen. You will always be unhappy. You will never be good enough. There is even a verse that says “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23 NIV)

So if God knows that we will fall short, and He has told us that we all fall short, He must have a solution for us. Because no amount of works are going to be good enough. Why it says so right there in the verse above. Thankfully God does have a solution and He made sure that all can come to Him if willing.

Some of you may already know this, and maybe some of you are thinking not this again, or that it is just to easy it must take more than that, that can’t be all I have to do.

So what is it already you maybe asking. Well It is the gift of His son Jesus Christ “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17 NIV)

God sent His son Jesus to die for us so that we could be with Him forever in eternity. All we need to do is believe that Jesus is God’s son and that He die for us. To take away our sin when we couldn’t. And not just because His Father sent Him to die for us, but also because He loves us just as much as His Father does. So all you have to do is just what the verse below says.

Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” (Romans 10:9-10 ESV)

Is it nice not to always wonder if you are good enough or doing enough to please God. Because He says that all He wants is you. He loves you, even though we all have faults, He loves you anyway and will always will.

(Then Mended Heart by Suzanne Eller. Chapter 3 (Pg. 59, 61) Underlined.) The rest is what came from my heart. Hope that it brings you encouragement and you find Jesus is always there for you and that He loves you always!
