“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of Lord.”
Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down.
And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him.
And He began to say to them,
“Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
Luke 4:18-21, NKJV
This Scripture is about Jesus reading a scroll from the prophet Isaiah in the synagogue in Nazareth His home town. Now when He read this out to everyone, the people there have known Him since He was a child. So just think what they may have been thinking when He said that He is the fulfillment of these Scriptures. I’m pretty sure they didn’t take it well, because they have known Him forever. Because of this they were blinded to the truth that He spoke. Which is really sad if you think about it.
The truth is that God Loves Us! Jesus Loves Us! And what He said in these verses is what He wants to do for us. He wants to heal the brokenhearted, give sight to the blind, help the oppressed and the captive. He wants us to know that He is the fulfillment of the Scriptures and that we can trust in Him. That He is there for us even when we feel alone and lost. He is right there holding us and will never let us go.
